Fighting Erupts in Western Tigray Amidst Accusations Between Ethiopia and TPLF

Fighting has broken out in western Tigray, marking one of the most serious threats to the fragile peace established by the 2022 Pretoria agreement. Clashes near the town of Sheraro have escalated tensions between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), with both sides trading blame for the renewed violence.

The 2022 Pretoria peace deal was seen as a crucial step toward ending years of conflict that devastated the Tigray region. However, the recent fighting threatens to unravel progress made so far and raises concerns about the potential for further instability in the region.

Western Tigray has been a hotspot due to its strategic location and the presence of armed groups loyal to different factions. The renewed clashes near Sheraro have already led to casualties and displacement of civilians, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The Ethiopian government has accused the TPLF of instigating the violence to undermine the peace process and regain control over contested areas. Conversely, the TPLF blames Ethiopian federal forces for aggressive actions that sparked the clashes.

Observers warn that the continuation of violence could lead to a wider conflict in northern Ethiopia, affecting not only Tigray but also neighboring regions such as Afar and Amhara. The international community has called for calm and urged both parties to return to dialogue in order to uphold the terms of the Pretoria peace agreement.

Humanitarian agencies are increasingly concerned about access to aid for affected populations amid fighting. They stress the importance of securing safe corridors for aid delivery to prevent further suffering.

The new flare-up highlights the complex dynamics in Tigray post-conflict, where political, ethnic, and territorial disputes remain unresolved. Analysts suggest that sustainable peace will require addressing underlying grievances and inclusion of all stakeholders in the peace process.

Efforts by regional and international mediators continue, but the success of these initiatives largely depends on the willingness of Ethiopia and the TPLF to de-escalate tensions and cooperate genuinely.

As the situation evolves, the international community remains watchful, emphasizing that peace in Tigray is critical not just for Ethiopia but for the stability of the entire Horn of Africa region.
