Amnesty International Accuses RSF of Ethnic Cleansing in Sudan’s El-Fasher

Amnesty International has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Sudanese paramilitary group, of committing ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity in and around the city of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in Sudan. The rights group has documented a series of attacks targeting specific ethnic communities in the region, leading to widespread displacement, destruction of homes, and loss of life.

The reports detail coordinated assaults by the RSF, which have resulted in devastating humanitarian consequences. Villages have been razed, civilians have been forcibly expelled, and many have been subjected to violence that Amnesty classifies as part of a deliberate campaign to change the demographic makeup of the area.

El-Fasher has been a focal point of conflict within the broader Darfur crisis, which has seen decades of violence and human rights abuses involving government forces, rebel groups, and various militias. The international community has repeatedly condemned the atrocities and called for accountability.

Amnesty’s findings emphasize that these recent actions by the RSF fit the criteria for ethnic cleansing, a grave violation of international law. The paramilitary’s conduct reportedly includes extrajudicial killings, looting, and mass displacement, all targeting particular ethnic groups identified in the investigations.

Human rights advocates urge immediate international intervention to halt the abuses and provide protection and aid to affected populations. They also call for thorough investigations and prosecutions of those responsible to prevent further atrocities.

The Sudanese government has yet to respond publicly to Amnesty’s allegations. However, the on-the-ground situation remains volatile, with ongoing clashes threatening the fragile stability of the region.

This latest report adds to the mounting evidence of systemic abuses in Darfur, underscoring the urgent need for sustained international attention, humanitarian support, and measures to promote peace and reconciliation in Sudan. The plight of civilians in El-Fasher is a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict and the critical importance of protecting human rights in conflict zones.
