Syrians Reject Trump’s Call for Syria to Combat Hezbollah in Lebanon

Residents of Damascus have firmly rejected the recent call by US President Donald Trump urging Syria to take action against Hezbollah in Lebanon. This suggestion has sparked a wave of opposition among Syrians, who perceive it as an external interference in their country’s regional affairs.

President Trump’s statement came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving US concerns over Hezbollah’s influence in Lebanon and its alliance with Iran. Trump suggested that Syria should actively combat Hezbollah’s presence and power in neighboring Lebanon, positioning it as a key step towards regional stability.

However, the reaction from ordinary Syrians in Damascus and across the country was overwhelmingly negative. Many see Hezbollah as a significant ally rather than an enemy, especially given its role in supporting the Syrian government during years of conflict. The group’s fighters have been instrumental in fighting against opposition forces in Syria’s prolonged civil war.

Residents expressed that the US proposal does not align with Syria’s national interests or public sentiment. In conversations with local citizens, it became clear that many Syrians view the call as part of broader American attempts to destabilize the region and undermine allies of the Syrian government.

Syria’s government has also historically maintained strong ties with Hezbollah due to their shared strategic and military interests. Damascus views Hezbollah as a critical proxy force capable of countering perceived threats from Israel and other regional adversaries.

Local analyst Dr. Khaled Mansour commented, “Trump’s call is unrealistic and ignores the complex web of alliances in the region. Syria and Hezbollah have a long history of cooperation that is deeply embedded in their national security frameworks. Asking Syria to confront Hezbollah disregards this reality.”

While the US government has frequently criticized Hezbollah for its designation as a terrorist organization and its military activities in Lebanon and Syria, Syrian residents believe that Washington’s approach lacks understanding of the ground realities and could further inflame tensions.

Diplomatic sources note that the US has increasingly placed pressure on Syria and its allies to isolate Hezbollah, aiming to shift the balance of power in Lebanon. However, this strategy faces persistent challenges given Hezbollah’s entrenched position and support among local populations.

The rejection of Trump’s proposal by Damascene residents highlights the broader complexities in the Middle East where alliances and hostilities are often fluid and deeply rooted in historical context.

As regional dynamics continue to evolve, the situation remains delicate. Attempts to force Syria into actions against Hezbollah are unlikely to succeed without significant changes in political landscapes and public opinion within Syria.

In summary, the residents of Damascus have voiced clear opposition to US President Donald Trump’s call for Syria to combat Hezbollah in Lebanon. This stance underscores the strong bonds between Syria and Hezbollah, reflecting a broader regional narrative that challenges external attempts to influence the conflict dynamics in the Middle East.

The unfolding response to Trump’s suggestion is a vivid reminder that in the intricate geopolitical environment of the region, simple solutions are rarely accepted and alliances continue to shape the future of ongoing conflicts.
