UNSC Condemns RSF Attacks in Sudan’s Kordofan, Calls for Immediate End to Conflict

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned the recent attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s Kordofan region. The Council voiced its deep concern over the escalating violence and the humanitarian crisis that has ensued as a result of these hostilities.

In a unanimous statement, the UNSC decried the atrocities committed during the conflict, highlighting reports of mass killings, widespread sexual violence, and deliberate attacks on aid workers who are trying to provide essential humanitarian assistance in the war-torn region.

Kordofan, a region marked by longstanding tensions, has witnessed a significant upsurge in violence in recent months. These attacks by the RSF have further destabilized the area, leading to a massive displacement of civilians and creating an urgent need for international intervention to curb the suffering.

The Security Council stressed that the targeting of civilians and humanitarian personnel violates international law and amounts to serious breaches of human rights. Such acts undermine peace and security in Sudan and the wider region.

The UNSC called upon all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities and engage in dialogue to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. It urged the Sudanese government and armed groups to ensure the protection of civilians and to allow unfettered access for humanitarian organizations to deliver aid.

In addition, the Council emphasized the importance of accountability for those responsible for the atrocities. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at establishing justice and promoting reconciliation in Sudan.

The international community has been closely monitoring the situation, with many countries expressing solidarity with the people of Sudan and offering assistance to address the humanitarian needs. However, the complexity and persistence of the conflict call for more coordinated and robust efforts to restore peace.

Human rights organizations have also condemned the attacks, documenting numerous cases of sexual violence and calling for immediate measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.

The UNSC’s condemnation comes at a critical time as Sudan faces multiple challenges, including political instability and economic difficulties, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing violence.

The Council’s resolution serves as a reminder of the global responsibility to uphold peace and human rights and the necessity of collective action to end the war and alleviate the suffering of civilians in Kordofan and across Sudan.

With the situation deteriorating, the UNSC has reiterated the need for sustained international engagement, including increased diplomatic efforts, support for peacebuilding initiatives, and humanitarian aid.

The hope remains that these concerted actions will pave the way for a durable ceasefire, leading to comprehensive peace talks and ultimately the restoration of stability in Sudan.

As the world watches closely, the people of Sudan continue to endure one of the most severe crises in recent history, underscoring the urgent need for peace and justice in the region.
