‘Israel killed international law in Gaza’, official tells Al Jazeera

Mustafa Barghouti, a senior official of the Palestinian National Initiative, has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, asserting that Israel has “killed international law” through its military operations. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Barghouti emphasized that the steadfastness and resilience demonstrated by Palestinians in Gaza reflects the failure of Israeli policies and tactics.

Barghouti’s remarks came amid ongoing violence and heightened tensions in the region, where Israeli military actions have drawn widespread criticism for their impact on civilian populations. According to Barghouti, these operations flagrantly violate international legal norms and human rights, undermining peace efforts.

He further argued that the international community has largely failed to hold Israel accountable, enabling the continuation of policies that he describes as oppressive and unlawful. Barghouti’s statement highlights a growing sentiment among Palestinians and their supporters that international mechanisms meant to safeguard human rights are being ignored or circumvented.

The Palestinian National Initiative, which Barghouti represents, advocates for non-violent resistance and political solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, Barghouti’s strong condemnation underscores the heightened frustrations regarding the recent military escalations in Gaza.

He called for renewed international attention and intervention to uphold the principles of international law, protect Palestinian civilians, and work towards a just resolution of the conflict. Barghouti also praised the resilience of Gaza’s population, characterizing their steadfastness as a powerful symbol of resistance against what he sees as Israeli aggression.

The exchange with Al Jazeera adds to the ongoing global discourse on the humanitarian and legal implications of the Gaza crisis, with many international observers urging restraint and a return to negotiations.

Barghouti’s comments resonate beyond the immediate conflict zone, spotlighting the broader challenges in enforcing international law in areas of sustained political and military conflict. His perspective calls into question the effectiveness of international institutions tasked with ensuring compliance with legal standards in wartime.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, voices like Barghouti’s highlight the urgent need for comprehensive solutions that prioritize human rights, legal accountability, and lasting peace in the region.
