Iran Condemns EU’s ‘Terrorist’ Label for IRGC as Hypocrisy

Iran has strongly condemned the European Union’s recent decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a ‘terrorist’ organization. The move has been met with harsh criticism from Iran’s foreign minister, who accused the EU of hypocrisy for imposing such a label on Iran’s elite military force.

The IRGC, a branch of Iran’s armed forces, has played a significant role in the country’s military and political landscape since its formation in 1979. It is viewed by Tehran as a legitimate defense institution responsible for protecting the Islamic Republic’s sovereignty and interests. However, several Western nations and entities have alleged that the IRGC supports various militant groups across the Middle East, leading to its designation as a terrorist organization.

The EU’s decision marks a significant shift in its policy stance, reflecting growing concerns about Iran’s regional activities and its influence through proxy groups. However, Iran’s foreign minister has dismissed the EU’s position as politically motivated and characterized the designation as unjust and unwarranted.

According to the Iranian official, the labeling of the IRGC overlooks the complexities of regional security and the multifaceted role the organization plays. He argued that the EU’s move ignores the actions of other entities and states that, in his view, contribute to instability in the Middle East.

The minister further accused the EU of double standards, suggesting that the bloc’s own dealings with various groups and their inconsistent approaches to international terrorism undermine its moral authority. He called the designation a politicized tactic that serves external powers’ agendas rather than genuine security concerns.

The IRGC’s designation as a terrorist entity by the EU has added a new layer of tension to an already strained relationship between Iran and European countries, amidst ongoing disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and regional policies.

Iran has warned that such labels could complicate diplomatic engagements and hinder prospects for dialogue and de-escalation. The government remains firm on defending the IRGC’s role and rejects any attempts to isolate it internationally.

This recent development highlights the deep divisions and challenges facing international efforts to address security issues in the Middle East. With Iran perceiving the EU’s move as biased, the prospects for cooperation on regional stability and counter-terrorism efforts appear increasingly complicated.

As diplomatic channels remain fraught, the future of EU-Iran relations will depend heavily on how both parties navigate these accusations and move forward with dialogue. The situation underscores the broader global contest over defining terrorism and managing complex geopolitical rivalries in a volatile region.
