Providence, R.I. – A crucial tip from a local individual, referred to only as “John” in police documents, has been pivotal in identifying the suspect linked to two separate deadly shootings — one at Brown University and another involving an MIT professor in Massachusetts. The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente, was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing some closure to the tense investigation.

The incident at Brown University began when a gunman fired over 40 rounds inside an engineering building, leaving the community shaken and police initially struggling to track down the perpetrator. The breakthrough came on the sixth day of the inquiry, largely due to information provided by John, who had multiple unusual encounters with Neves Valente prior to the violence.

John’s observations included noting Neves Valente’s atypical attire for the weather and witnessing suspicious behavior near a grey Nissan Sentra with Florida license plates. This detail, previously unknown to authorities, helped law enforcement obtain surveillance footage from over 70 street cameras across Providence. It became a cornerstone in piecing together the suspect’s movements.

Further encounters documented by John described a tense “cat and mouse” game as the two crossed paths multiple times near the engineering building, with Neves Valente appearing evasive and defensive, denying any acquaintance with John and questioning why he was being followed.

John actively shared his findings on social media, prompting others to advise him to contact the FBI, which he did. The tip was officially received by police on December 16, a few days after the initial shooting and shortly after a dedicated tip line was established.

Authorities acknowledge John as the linchpin in resolving the case, with Rhode Island’s Attorney General Peter Neronha stating, “He blew this case right open. When you crack it, you crack it.”

The FBI has yet to confirm whether John will receive the $50,000 reward offered for information leading to the suspect’s identification and apprehension, though officials indicated it would be a reasonable outcome.

The tragic incidents underscore the critical role community members can play in assisting investigations and bringing perpetrators to justice.
