Kevin Hassett, a prominent candidate for the Federal Reserve chairmanship under President Donald Trump, stated that while he would relay the president’s perspectives to Fed officials, the Federal Reserve would retain the authority to accept or reject those views when determining interest rate policies. Speaking in a recent interview, Hassett emphasized his intention to maintain regular communication with Trump if appointed but clarified that the president would not hold a decisive vote in Fed decisions. “His opinion is valued only if it is supported by solid data,” Hassett explained, noting that ultimately, the Fed’s committee members would decide independently on policy actions.

These remarks come amid reports that Trump is concluding interviews with potential candidates to succeed Jerome Powell as the Fed chair. The president has openly called for significant reductions in the central bank’s benchmark interest rate, currently near 3.6%, advocating for cuts to around or below 1%, a stance largely at odds with economic consensus.

Trump’s vocal approach toward Fed policy has sparked debate over the future autonomy of the central bank, which historically has operated free from direct political influence to effectively manage inflation and economic stability. Hassett acknowledged the importance of the Fed’s independence, highlighting that decisions are made collectively by the committee.

When asked about the role of presidential input, Trump asserted his belief that his perspective should be influential due to his business acumen and success. Meanwhile, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh remains a leading contender for the Fed chair, although Trump has expressed favorable views about both Warsh and Hassett.

Hassett summed up his outlook, expressing enthusiasm for engaging in ongoing dialogue with the president while upholding the principle that the Fed’s decisions rest with its voting members. “The role of the Fed is to operate independently,” he said, adding a note of levity regarding his willingness to converse with Trump indefinitely due to the enjoyment of their discussions.
