Winter Storm Triggers Heavy Snow and Arctic Cold Across U.S., Causing Travel Disruptions

A powerful winter storm swept through parts of the United States this weekend, plunging temperatures well below freezing in the Midwest and blanketing the Northeast with heavy snow, resulting in significant travel delays. The storm, which commenced Saturday, delivered several inches of snow to the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area, marking the season’s first major snowfall. Snow also lightly dusted portions of New England.

By Sunday evening, the storm was forecasted to weaken, but it left behind bitterly cold arctic conditions, with overnight wind chill values plunging to or below zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 Celsius). Throughout New Jersey, road crews and contractors worked relentlessly to clear snow and treat surfaces, prompting the state’s Department of Transportation to advise residents to limit travel unless essential. In New York City, sanitation workers deployed salt spreaders and plows overnight to clear roads and bike lanes.

In Pennsylvania, authorities imposed a temporary speed limit reduction to 45 mph (72 kph) on interstate highways to enhance safety amidst hazardous driving conditions. The widespread impact on air travel was apparent as over 1,000 U.S. flights faced delays and more than 100 cancellations were reported.

Simultaneously, arctic air surged southward from Canada into northern states. The National Weather Service noted Sunday morning as the coldest of the season so far, with temperatures dropping to -10 degrees Fahrenheit (-23 Celsius) at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and even colder in some communities reaching -22 degrees Fahrenheit (-30 Celsius).

Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest, still recovering from severe flooding and mudslides that forced thousands to evacuate, braced for additional rain and strong winds forecast to arrive late Sunday. Authorities in this region continue monitoring weather conditions closely as residents prepare for another bout of challenging weather.

The extensive winter storm has thus impacted multiple regions across the country, creating hazardous travel conditions and testing the resilience of affected communities.
