Verstappen Claims Pole in Abu Dhabi as Championship Battle Reaches Climax; Hamilton Struggles

Max Verstappen delivered an imposing performance in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, securing pole position ahead of McLaren title contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. The Dutch driver’s dominant display sets the stage for a thrilling championship decider.

Both of Verstappen’s laps in the final session were exceptional, with his best time putting him 0.201 seconds clear of Norris, who narrowly edged out Piastri by a mere 0.029 seconds. Millenium TV has learned that Norris enters the final race with a 12-point advantage over Verstappen, while Piastri trails the Briton by an additional four points. Norris can clinch the championship with a podium finish, regardless of other results, while Verstappen would secure a fifth consecutive title if he wins the race and Norris finishes fourth or lower.

Mercedes’ George Russell will start from fourth on the grid, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in fifth and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso in sixth. It was a challenging day for Lewis Hamilton, who crashed his vehicle in final practice and was subsequently eliminated in the first segment of qualifying, meaning he will start 16th.

Verstappen expressed his delight, stating, “Incredibly happy to be in first. That’s the only thing we can do – try to maximise everything with the car. And we certainly did that in qualifying.” Red Bull employed a strategic move, utilizing team-mate Yuki Tsunoda to provide Verstappen with a slipstream on his initial run, resulting in the fastest lap of the weekend by over 0.4 seconds. Verstappen further improved his time on his second attempt, even without the assistance of a tow.

Norris, initially third fastest among the title contenders, significantly closed the gap on his second run. He commented, “Max did a good job so congrats to him. We did everything we could. I think my lap was pretty good. I was pretty happy. Disappointed not to be on pole for the final weekend but we just weren’t fast enough today. We’ll have to do it tomorrow. I still want to win tomorrow and that’s going to be the goal.” Piastri added that his final lap was “pretty good” and that the results set up “a pretty exciting day tomorrow.”

Russell, despite some early session errors, secured fourth, 0.438 seconds off the pace. Leclerc managed to qualify fifth, admitting over the radio his surprise at making it through after a “driving like rallying” lap in the second qualifying session. Hamilton, meanwhile, experienced his third consecutive first-session knockout and offered “no answer” for his lack of performance, following his earlier crash into Turn Nine during practice. Alonso delivered a strong performance, securing sixth place and completing a rare qualifying clean sweep over his team-mate, Lance Stroll, with a 24-0 record in qualifying sessions this season. The top ten was rounded out by Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls), and Yuki Tsunoda (Red Bull).

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is scheduled to commence at 13:00 GMT on December 7.
