An urgent search operation is in progress for a British teenager, George Smyth, who has been missing for over a week after embarking on a hike in Romania’s challenging Bucegi Mountains. The 18-year-old University of Bristol student, originally from Shropshire, vanished on November 23, prompting daily search efforts by Brașov Mountain Rescue.
Millenium TV has learned that Smyth is believed to have departed from Poiana Brașov with the intention of reaching Bran, famously known for Count Dracula’s castle. His last known contact was from Tiganesti, where he placed an emergency call via the 112 service, seeking assistance.
Smyth’s rugby club in Newport, Shropshire, expressed profound concern for their “much-loved member.” The club stated that everyone associated with the organization was “deeply concerned to hear that George Smyth has been reported missing while hiking the Bucegi Mountain range in Romania.” They highlighted his dedication, noting he represented their Colts last season and frequently volunteered his time to coach younger age groups, emphasizing, “He has always been part of the Newport rugby family, and this news has touched all of us.” The club conveyed their unwavering hope for his safe return, asking members to keep him and his family in their thoughts.
A spokesperson for the University of Bristol confirmed to Millenium TV, “We’ve been informed that one of our students has been reported missing after independently travelling to Romania to go hiking.” The university expressed deep concern for his welfare and is maintaining close contact with his family, stating their thoughts are with them as they await updates.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office also confirmed their involvement, stating, “We are supporting the family of British man who is missing in Romania and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Brașov Mountain Rescue reported that despite continuous efforts since last Sunday evening, Smyth has not yet been located. His family has appealed to the public, sharing his photograph and urging anyone with relevant information to contact the mountain rescue service or the nearest police station immediately.
