The highly anticipated draw for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia has set the stage for thrilling encounters, with rivals England and Wales slated to clash in a blockbuster Pool F showdown. Millenium TV has learned that the fierce competitors will be joined by Tonga and emerging side Zimbabwe in what promises to be a compelling group.
This pairing evokes memories of the 2015 tournament, where a crucial Welsh victory at Twickenham played a significant role in host nation England’s unexpected early exit from the competition. Both teams will be keen to assert dominance from the outset in Australia.
Adding to the drama, Ireland and Scotland find themselves in the same pool once again, replicating their grouping from France 2023. In that previous encounter, Ireland secured a decisive 36-14 win, while Scotland unfortunately did not advance to the knockout stages. Joining them in Pool D are Uruguay and Portugal, both of whom impressed audiences with their underdog performances in the last World Cup.
Intriguingly, the winners of Pool D and Pool F are positioned to avoid facing the reigning champions and top-ranked South Africa until a potential final match, assuming the Springboks successfully top their own group. Furthermore, if world rankings hold true, leading contenders New Zealand and France would also be kept separate from England and Ireland’s potential paths until the ultimate showdown. Should this hypothetical scenario unfold, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation positioned on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.
The host nation, Australia, has been drawn into Pool A alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time world champions, the All Blacks. The Wallabies are set to kick off the tournament in a spectacular opening fixture in Perth on October 1, 2027. Elsewhere, current holders South Africa will compete against Italy, Georgia, and Romania in their pool, while France is grouped with Japan, the 2031 tournament hosts USA, and Samoa. Argentina completes the top-tier pairings, set to face Fiji, Spain, and Canada as the tournament expands to include 24 teams, an increase from the 20 participants in France.
This edition of the Rugby World Cup will also mark a historic first, introducing a last-16 round into the competition structure. While the victor of Pool F, featuring England and Wales, might avoid some of the sport’s traditional powerhouses in the initial knockout stages, they are likely to encounter the runner-up from Pool B—expected to be Italy—in the newly introduced last-16 clash. Millenium TV understands that four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the group stages, adding another layer of strategic complexity to the tournament.
