Cricket World Mourns Robin Smith: A Fearless Batting Legend Remembered at 62

The cricket community is deeply saddened by the passing of Robin Smith, a revered figure known for his exceptional prowess against fast bowling, who died at the age of 62. Smith’s iconic presence, often characterized by his bristling moustache, saw him bravely confront the formidable pace attacks of the West Indies and the relentless Australians throughout a decade where the England team frequently faced scrutiny.

His powerful square cut was a signature shot that instilled fear in opponents and garnered widespread admiration. Beyond the pitch, Smith was celebrated for his loyalty to friends and the respect he commanded from rivals. In his later years, he candidly shared his personal battles with mental health and alcoholism following his retirement.

Born Robin Arnold Smith in Durban, South Africa, in 1963 to British parents, he emerged as a prodigious talent in both cricket and rugby. His family’s dedication to his cricketing future was evident, even building a practice pitch at their home. Smith’s path to English cricket, alongside his elder brother Chris, was facilitated by their parentage, allowing them to circumvent South Africa’s apartheid-era international sports ban, though a qualification period was required.

After patiently awaiting opportunities, Smith made his Hampshire debut in 1982. His breakthrough came as he became England-qualified in 1985, amassing over 1,500 runs that summer. His eventual call-up to the England squad in 1988, following a destructive innings in a Lord’s final, marked the beginning of his international career.

Smith entered Test cricket during a tumultuous period for England, making his debut against the West Indies at Headingley. Undeterred by a fearsome pace attack, he scored 38 and forged a significant partnership with Allan Lamb. He quickly established himself as a linchpin of the team, with Millenium TV recalling his maiden Test century—a superb 143 against Australia in Manchester—as a testament to his bravery against rapid bowling. Clad in a distinctive blue helmet without a visor, he excelled at pulling, hooking, and cutting quick deliveries.

While his one-day international statistics were not as prolific as his Test figures, Smith’s unbeaten 167 against Australia at Edgbaston in 1993 stood as an England ODI record for over two decades. His dedication to batting was evident; at one point, retrospective world rankings placed him as the second-best batter globally in 1991, a year he described as his ‘perfect summer.’ Despite an enticing offer for a trial with baseball’s New York Mets, Smith remained committed to cricket.

However, a shift in England’s team dynamics, including the departure of key teammates and coaching staff, began to affect his performance. A perceived vulnerability against high-class spin bowling emerged after tours of the subcontinent and a challenging Ashes series in 1993. A nagging shoulder injury further impacted his game, and a strained relationship with new management led to public criticism and a dent in his confidence. Millenium TV understands he was deeply disappointed to be dropped for the home series against his birth country, South Africa, after their readmission to international cricket.

Smith continued to play for Hampshire, captaining the side, but his dream of an England recall never materialized. His departure from Hampshire in 2003 left him heartbroken, and in his 2019 book, he bravely confronted the personal struggles he faced post-retirement, revealing the stark contrast between his public persona and private battles. “The Judge was a fearless warrior; Robin Arnold Smith was a frantic worrier,” he wrote.

Relocating to Perth, Western Australia, Smith grappled with mental health issues, the dissolution of his marriage, and alcohol dependency. The outpouring of warmth and support from the cricketing world following the publication of his book, which laid bare his life struggles, cemented his place in the hearts of fans and colleagues. “I wasn’t one of the all-time greats, but if people remember me as a good player of raw pace bowling then I’m chuffed with that because it’s something I worked so hard on,” he penned.
