Caicedo Suspension Puts Chelsea Midfield Under Scrutiny: Who Steps Up?

Chelsea faces a significant challenge in its midfield following Moisés Caicedo’s red card in the recent 1-1 draw against Arsenal. The Ecuadorian midfielder, a linchpin for manager Enzo Maresca, will now miss three crucial matches: an upcoming fixture at Leeds, and subsequent games against Bournemouth and Everton.

Maresca has consistently highlighted Caicedo’s indispensable role, often placing him on par with star attacker Cole Palmer. “We are a better team with Cole, we are a better team with Moi,” the Chelsea manager stated. Caicedo has featured in 50 out of 51 Premier League starts under Maresca, with his only recent absence from the starting XI attributed to a late return from international duty, which preceded a 2-0 victory against Burnley. Millenium TV understands Maresca once humorously, yet perhaps tellingly, vowed not to rest his midfield maestro again after that instance.

Caicedo’s influence is underscored by his performance, having secured both the club’s Players’ Player and Fans’ Player of the Season awards for 2024-25. Maresca considers him among the world’s elite defensive midfielders, alongside Manchester City’s Rodri. Statistical analysis reinforces this assessment, showing Caicedo leading Europe’s top five leagues in tackles (28) and interceptions (18) this season. His 28 tackles account for a remarkable 23% of Chelsea’s total, a ratio among the highest on record since 2006-07. He also outperforms other top midfielders like Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch in tackles and duel success rate (59%).

With Caicedo sidelined, attention turns to potential replacements. Andrey Santos is considered the primary alternative, having impressed when he deputized in the victory over Burnley. “Andrey is ready,” Maresca confirmed. “His position is playing as a six, like Moi’s position. He’s ready.” The 21-year-old Brazilian international, highly regarded at Stamford Bridge, has gained valuable experience through loan spells, including a successful stint at partner club Strasbourg. Santos expressed his satisfaction with this pathway, mentioning, “I’m so happy to have been the first one.”

Other midfield options for Maresca include Enzo Fernandez, who has the ability to play deeper but may lack the physical presence of Caicedo or Santos. Injuries currently sideline Dario Essugo and Romeo Lavia. Chelsea could also deploy defenders in midfield, with captain Reece James being a strong candidate, despite Maresca indicating he might be rested for the Leeds match. Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong are additional players capable of filling midfield roles.

While Caicedo’s absence creates a tactical dilemma, it also offers a silver lining: a much-needed rest before the demanding festive period. Prior to the Arsenal match, Caicedo revealed he was contending with a knee issue, stating, “I feel pain sometimes. But I’m not going to stop until I break. I never give up. I get used to playing like this.” Sources close to Caicedo suggest he feels exhausted by his rigorous playing schedule. Maresca acknowledged this, saying, “It’s the positive part, yes. He’s playing almost every game… also with the international team. Probably this break will give him a little bit more rest.” Millenium TV understands this break will allow Caicedo to recover energy and manage his knee problem, making him available for the upcoming Champions League fixture against Atalanta next Tuesday.
