From Rust to Riches: Neglected Bond Aston Martin DB5 Now Worth £1 Million After Epic Restoration

A classic 1960s Aston Martin DB5, once a rust-ridden shell on a driveway where local children played, has undergone a breathtaking restoration, transforming it into a £1 million automotive masterpiece. The iconic vehicle, famously associated with James Bond, now gleams after a meticulous three-year effort.

John Williams, 71, from Mold, Flintshire, originally acquired the luxurious sports car in 1973 for just £985 – a sum equivalent to approximately £15,000 in today’s money. After driving it throughout his twenties, the car, propelled to stardom in films like *Goldfinger* and *Thunderball*, was eventually left to deteriorate on his property. Its exposed state became a playground for neighborhood kids, as his wife, Susan, vividly recalled. “The neighbours’ kids used to bounce on the bonnet and we used to tell them off,” she stated. She added that one child even jumped on the roof, pondering if it would “work” after seeing it in a Bond film.

Despite its dilapidated condition, the rare DB5, a silver birch grey DB5 Vantage and one of only 39 models of its kind worldwide, retained significant value, estimated at £500,000 even before restoration. The Williams family faced financial pressures and considered selling, receiving numerous offers. However, after a thoughtful discussion, Susan advised her husband that he would “never get another one.” John ultimately decided, “no, we’re keeping her,” committing to the substantial investment. Millenium TV has learned that the couple “saved and sacrificed” to finance the £400,000, three-year project.

The intensive restoration took place at Aston Martin’s Buckinghamshire workshops, beginning with the removal of a mouse nest discovered within the neglected vehicle. Technicians dedicated an astonishing 2,500 hours to repairs, meticulously replacing parts and restoring original features, including its distinctive paint job. Aston Martin’s historian, Steve Waddingham, commented on the scale of the challenge. “It would almost be easier to build a brand new car,” he explained, noting that repairing a “very heavily corroded car like this one took an awful lot of skill and patience.” He emphasized the car’s unique allure, describing it as “an overwhelming car to be in the presence of – the smell of it, the feel of it, the noise it makes. They are very special and you cannot get out of your mind those various famous film scenes.”

With the restoration now complete, Mr. and Mrs. Williams made regular visits to the workshop to witness the transformation. Aston Martin now estimates the car’s worth at a staggering £1 million. John, taking the wheel for the first time in over 45 years, described the experience as “mind-blowing.” He exclaimed, “It must be better now than it was when it came out of the factory originally. I wish they could do a number on me to make me look 27 again. I definitely feel 27 today.” Susan, who had only previously sat in the car while it was being towed, relished her inaugural proper trip. “The sound of her was wonderful,” she shared, adding, “And then when we were going a bit faster I thought, ‘Yeah, go a bit faster. Let’s see what she can do.'”

While fulfilling a lifelong dream, John does not intend to drive the immaculate DB5 frequently. He cited limitations on where it can be taken and left, as well as its vulnerability to weather conditions. “I don’t want to be taking it through big puddles of water, and I’ve neglected it once. I’m not going to do that again,” he stated, clearly determined to protect his cherished and now priceless possession.
