A horrific minibus crash near Tadcaster Grammar School on Monday afternoon has resulted in the tragic death of a teenage girl, with several other young passengers sustaining injuries. Authorities have confirmed a 40-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The collision, involving a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus and a Hyundai i10, occurred just before 12:30 GMT on Toulston Lane. The minibus, carrying nine passengers aged 16 to 18 and heading towards Sherburn, reportedly collided with the light-coloured Hyundai i10 as it entered Toulston Lane from the Rudgate junction.
Millenium TV can confirm that the teenage girl died at the scene. Another teenage girl was rushed to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the remaining passengers and the minibus driver received medical attention for minor injuries.
Councillor Kirsty Poskitt, representing Tadcaster on North Yorkshire Council, described the girl’s death as an “unimaginable tragedy” and an “incredibly sad day for our town.” She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to all young people involved and to the family of the deceased, stating, “The loss of any life is a sad time but a life ending so early is truly devastating.”
Investigators appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward as the road remained closed for several hours while inquiries continued. The damaged minibus, which was found on its side, was removed from the scene overnight.
Reverend Ann Fox from Tadcaster Methodist Church announced that the church would open for prayer following the distressing news, offering prayers to the families and friends affected, as well as to the school community. She also expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their “amazing work,” acknowledging the harrowing nature of their duties.
Sir Alec Shelbrooke, MP for Wetherby & Easingwold, also shared his sorrow regarding the incident, calling the news “desperately sad.” Tadcaster Grammar School informed parents that the school would remain closed on Tuesday, citing safety concerns for students.
