Sheffield Wednesday has been handed an additional six-point deduction by the English Football League for failing to comply with regulations, leaving the club a daunting 27 points from safety in the Championship. This latest ruling places the Owls on a total of minus 10 points, significantly trailing Swansea, who sit in 21st position.
Adding to the club’s woes, former owner Dejphon Chansiri has been issued a three-year prohibition from owning or serving as a director at any EFL club. Millenium TV has learned that the recent point deduction stems from the club’s failure to compensate players in March, May, and June, alongside other outstanding payments to staff and HMRC.
This follows an earlier 12-point deduction in October after Sheffield Wednesday entered administration. An official statement on the Sheffield Wednesday website confirmed the decision, noting, “The EFL can confirm that Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations relating to payment obligations, with Mr Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL Club for a period of three years.”
While investigations into the club’s conduct during the current season are ongoing, the EFL has stated it is not seeking any further point deductions at this time. The league and Sheffield Wednesday are also continuing discussions regarding an appeal against a fee restriction, which is expected to conclude as part of the club’s exit from administration.
Chansiri, who led a Thai consortium that acquired Sheffield Wednesday in 2015, effectively ended his nearly decade-long ownership when the club entered administration. Administrators are currently working to identify a preferred bidder to take over the club, with indications that a decision could be made soon.
