Royal Drapes Transform into Festive Charity Stockings in Unique Auction

Curtains once adorning the windows of a royal residence have found a new purpose, being meticulously transformed into Christmas stockings set for a charity auction. These elegant drapes, originating from Sandringham House in Norfolk, have been skillfully repurposed into 25 unique stockings by a dedicated sewing group.

Members of the group convene at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, which serves as the base for The King’s Foundation charity. All proceeds from the upcoming auction will directly benefit this foundation. Sarah McClymont, 31, the lead tutor for the sewing bee, expressed the group’s immense pride in their work. “Being given the opportunity to work with such historically significant fabric was a real honour for them and they are so proud of how the stockings turned out,” McClymont told Millenium TV.

Of the 25 handcrafted stockings, one is destined to be a Christmas gift for King Charles III. The remaining 24 will be offered in the charity auction to raise vital funds. The King’s Foundation is renowned for its commitment to providing opportunities for individuals to acquire practical heritage skills, with a strong emphasis on sustainability.

Ms. McClymont highlighted that this latest project perfectly illustrates The King’s Foundation’s dedication to “craftsmanship, responsible design, and sustainable fashion and textiles.” She also shared hopes that the winning bidders would cherish their stockings. “We hope that whoever is lucky enough to win one of the stockings at auction will pass it down as a family heirloom to be treasured for decades to come,” she explained.

The creation of each stocking was a labor of love, with group members dedicating six hours to the intricate process, employing hand embroidery, piping, and precise seam-matching techniques. Christine Wilson, 72, and Andrea Middlemiss, 63, both residents of the nearby town of Cumnock, revealed they had no prior sewing experience before joining the group. Ms. Wilson, a retired finance officer, was an early member, while Ms. Middlemiss, a café worker, joined six months later.

“Over the years we’ve done a lot of different ideas, and we’ve learned so much from the tutors,” Ms. Wilson remarked. “They’ve been excellent. It’s a great community-based organisation.” Her friend, Ms. Middlemiss, added that she can now confidently create dresses and jackets, describing the royal commission as an “honour.”

The charity auction is currently underway and will conclude at 17:00 GMT on Friday, December 12. Millenium TV encourages viewers to participate and support this noble cause.
