HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hurricane Kiko continues to weaken over cooler waters as it continues on a track that should take its center to the north of the Hawaiian islands.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said at 5 a.m. Sunday, Kiko remains a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale with maximum sustained winds at 115 miles per hour with higher gusts.
Kiko is a relatively small tropical cyclone, although the eye has become less circular during the past few hours. Hurricane force winds extend 35 miles from the center, while tropical storm force winds extend 80 miles.
The hurricane was located about 715 miles east of Hilo, or 915 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, and was moving to the west-northwest at 13 miles per hour.
