Connecticut invests $9 million to combat food insecurity

CONNECTICUT, USA — Gov. Ned Lamont and state officials announced Tuesday that Connecticut Foodshare will receive millions in new state funding to help combat growing food insecurity across Connecticut.

The announcement took place at Connecticut Foodshare’s Wallingford distribution center. Federal food assistance programs are currently facing significant cuts, leaving food banks and local pantries scrambling to meet increasing demand.

“There used to be tractor trailer trucks of fresh food coming up from Washington every week and we’re not getting that any longer,” Lamont said, referencing the loss of federal support.

The funding is part of Connecticut’s biennial budget, with $9 million allocated to food pantry support over the next two years—$3 million in 2026 and $6 million in 2027. This investment will bolster Connecticut Foodshare’s distribution operations and help increase access to food pantries statewide.

State leaders emphasized that food insecurity often hides in plain sight.
