Teen killed in shooting in New Castle, Delaware

A man is dead after being shot in New Castle, Delaware, on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson with the police department.

The shooting happened on July 22 just before 4 p.m. in the area of Wilton and Stonebridge boulevards, police said.

Officers were called to the scene for a report of a shooting and when they got there they found a man, later identified as 18-year-old Mateo Renato Banegas, who had been shot multiple times, police reported.

Video obtained by NBC10 captured the terrified moments when neighbors at an apartment complex ran for cover as more than a dozen shots rang out. Judy Evans can be seen in the video running into her home when the gunshots were heard. One man who lives next door, Tony Wilson, said he was on the people who tried to help the victim. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, officials said.

Police blocked traffic for at least five hours on Tuesday along Wilton Street where multiple evidence markers were seen.

Wilson said that he made calls to police about crime in the area and said that he think this shooting could have been prevented if officers patrolled more often.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
