A fatality resulted in an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Mayfield on Thursday night.
The Graves County Sheriff’s department posted details of the incident that began earlier on Thursday when a man in Benton County, Tennessee reportedly fled from a courtroom where jury deliberations were underway concerning charges against him of domestic assault and rape of a child.
The Graves County Sheriff received information that the suspect might be in the Mayfield area, and at around 10 p.m. deputies spotted the suspect’s vehicle at a motel on Housman Street.
While attempting to take the suspect into custody, a struggle ensued, and the suspect was able to get back into the motel room. As other deputies and officers from the Mayfield Police Department arrived, the suspect later opened the door and brandished a handgun at deputies and officers. Numerous commands were given that were ignored. At some point, members of law enforcement fired, and the suspect was hit and later pronounced deceased at the scene by the coroner.
Body camera footage of the incident was secured. Two sheriff’s deputies were placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.
Kentucky State Police are leading the investigation into the incident.
