Indiana State Police: Shooting in Harrison County leaves 2 dead, 1 injured

HARRISON COUNTY, Ind. — A shooting in Harrison County left two people dead and one other injured on Friday.

According to a press release, first responders received a 911 call around 6 p.m. about a shooting that unfolded in the 3000 block of Mosquito Creek Road near Laconia. Local police in Harrison County and Indiana State Police troopers responded to the area to investigate the tip the 911 caller provided.

When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult male who had been shot in the arm. The man indicated that he had run from the scene of the shooting to a nearby residence to call for help.

ISP characterized the man’s injuries as being “non-life-threatening.” He was still transported from the scene to University Hospital in Louisville to receive treatment.

Eventually, law enforcement tracked down the residence the shooting took place in. Upon their arrival at the home, police attempted to make contact with any individuals that might’ve been in the area.

Per ISP, law enforcement’s attempts to make contact with people at the scene weren’t successful. As a result, police entered the residence and found two people dead — an adult male and an adult female. ISP identified the decedents as 84-year-old Donald Ray Weaver and 82-year-old Virginia Y. Scofield.

After an investigation, detectives determined Weaver and the man he shot had gotten into a verbal argument before the shooting. The man tried to leave the residence during the verbal argument, but Weaver shot him with a handgun.

ISP indicated that, after the man was shot in the arm, more gunshots were heard coming from the house. Police believe Weaver shot the man in the arm, shot Scofield and then turned the gun on himself.

Police are still investigating the incident. The Harrison County Coroner’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies are assisting ISP.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
