2 hurt when Michigan driver crashes through electrical pole, causing car to catch fire

GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Two people were injured when a Michigan driver crashed through an electrical pole, causing the car they were in to catch fire.

The crash happened around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2024, on Cass Road, north of Dendrinos Drive, in Garfield Township.

Michigan State Police troopers were called to the scene and found a car on its side, the engine compartment engulfed in flames.

Officials said an electrical pole had been snapped in half, and there were wires hanging about six feet off the roadway.

Deputies and troopers put out the fire, but they couldn’t reach the occupants of the car because of the electrical wires.

The driver, a 28-year-old Northport woman, was responsive, but the 35-year-old passenger from Traverse City was not, police said.

Officials gave first aid instructions to the driver until both people could be extracted by Traverse City firefighters.

The Traverse City man was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Police said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues.
