Today in Delaware County history, May 21

100 Years Ago, 1924: The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company’s local freight train was robbed yesterday, about $100 worth of clothing and valuables being taken from the caboose, while halted at Eddystone to shift cars. The stolen articles belonged to the conductor, John N. Wilson, Baltimore, and to the brakeman, John Cage, Philadelphia. The carmen failed to lock the caboose door while they were some distance away with part of the train.

75 Years Ago, 1949: A record crowd is expected to flock to the Rose Tree Hunting Club this afternoon for the popular spring meeting. Many county residents regard the spring races as one of the high points of their calendars, and consequently a good number of horse lovers will be seen occupying the boxes or standing along the rail.

50 Years Ago, 1974: Bitter struggles within the Republican Party apparently were having little effect on Delaware County voter turnout for today’s primary election. Despite a hot GOP congressional battle and numerous other contests on both sides of the political aisle, voting generally was reported light to normal in early checks of polling places. Bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures due to go to the mid-70s seemed to be doing little to encourage voters to come out to the polls.

25 Years Ago, 1999: Rumors that the New Orleans Cafe deal for Old Borough Hall had been scratched were unfounded. Media council signed on the dotted line for a five-year lease with restaurateur Dan Funk, again setting taste buds in motion. The delay in closing the deal, largely private negotiating issues, ended last night with the agreement between Funk and the borough. Council President Joan Hagan said the substantive change from earlier terms has the borough putting on a new roof work and installing a sprinkler system. Those improvements would, she indicated, be of value to the borough as property owners.

10 Years Ago, 2014: An 18-year-old Lansdowne man who reportedly refused to stop for Upper Darby police during a routine traffic detail Tuesday was arrested on weapons violations. According to police, the man refused to stop during a traffic detail at Roselawn Avenue and Hilldale Road at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, instead choosing to lead police on a car chase into Lansdowne. Officer Angelo O’Rangers followed the man as he drove through a least four stop signs and turned into Hillview Circle, which is a dead end, police said. A fully-loaded .32-caliber handgun, scales, packing material and three vials of suspected marijuana were located inside of the trunk of the man’s car.
