One person was killed and two others, including a child, were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon along Interstate 80/94 in Northwest Indiana, authorities said.
The collision was reported at around 1:25 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near the Columbia Avenue overpass between Calumet Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard, according to the Indiana State Police.
A preliminary investigation revealed a semi was slowing down in traffic ahead of a Kia SUV, which was either stopped behind the semi or slowing as well. The Sorento was rear-ended by another semi that was traveling at a high rate of speed, police said. The impact of the collision pushed the SUV underneath the trailer of the first semi. A third semi was also rear-ended, according to authorities.
A passenger in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver and another passenger, a child of unknown age, were transported to an area hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
The individual who died had yet to be identified as of Thursday night. State police said the person’s name would be released by the Lake County Coroner’s Office once family members are notified.
