Stats: Travis Head joins elite list after WC final heroics

Stats highlights from the final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad.

6 ODI World Cup titles for Australia – the most by a team. This was their eighth appearance in the finals and the fifth title win in a row, with their last defeat coming in 1996.

5 defeats for India in World Cup matches since the 2011 edition, in 37 matches. Three of these defeats have come in knockout contests – semifinals in 2015 and 2019, and the finals in 2023. The other two came in the league stages (one each in 2011 and 2019) This was only the sixth time in these 37 matches they got bowled out, four of which ended in defeats and one in a tie.

4 Travis Head became the fourth player to win the Player of the Match award in both semifinals and finals of World Cups after Mohinder Amarnath in 1983, Aravinda de Silva in 1996, Shane Warne in 1999.

7 Head became the seventh player to score a century in the World Cup final and the second to do so in a run chase after Aravinda de Silva in 1996 against Australia in Lahore.

192 Partnership between Head and Marnus Labuschagne for the fourth wicket – the second highest for any wicket in a World Cup final behind the unbeaten 234-run stand between Ricky Ponting and Damien Martyn for the third wicket against India in Johannesburg in 2003. It is also the highest partnership against India in World Cup 2023 beating 181 between Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell in the semifinal at Wankhede.

0/99 The combined figures for Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja – the first time in 11 matches in World Cup 2023 that Indian spinners have gone wicketless.

32 years & 118 days The average age of Australian XI that played the final – the oldest team to feature in a World Cup final. Their opponents India had an average age of 31 years & 174 days, just one day younger than the Australian side that beat Sri Lanka in Bridgetown in 2007, which was the previous oldest XI to feature in a World Cup final.

5 This was the fifth instance of Virat Kohli hitting a 50+ score in five successive innings in ODIs – the most by any player. No other player has done it more than twice. This was the second time Kohli has done in World Cups after 2019; Steven Smith the only other player to do so before him.

23 wickets by Adam Zampa is the joint most for a spinner in a World Cup, level with Muttiah Muralitharan in the 2007 edition. The only players to take more in a World Cup are Mitchell Starc (27 in 2019), Glenn McGrath (26 in 2007) and Mohammed Shami (24 in 2023).
