Kohli races past two major Tendulkar records

All the stat highlights from the record-breaking semifinal between India and New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai

Kohli usurps Tendulkar

50 Hundreds for Virat Kohli in One Day Internationals – the first player to reach the milestone. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s long standing record of 49 centuries. Tendulkar held the record for most ODI hundreds since September 1998 when he surpassed Desmond Haynes’ then record of 17 hundreds. (Read more about Kohli’s incredible feat here)

711 Runs by Kohli in the 2023 World Cup is the most by a player in a single edition of the tournament surpassing Tendulkar’s long standing record of 673 runs which he made in 2003 in South Africa. Eight 50+ scores for Kohli in World Cup 2023 is also the most by a player in a single edition surpassing seven each by Tendulkar in 2003 and Shakib Al Hasan in 2019.

Shami continues his dream run

7/57 by Mohammed Shami is the best bowling figures for India in ODI cricket, bettering Stuart Binny’s 6/4 against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2014. The previous best for India in a World Cup contest was Ashish Nehra’s 6/23 against England in Durban in 2003. Shami’s 7/57 also happens to be the best figures against New Zealand, surpassing Shoaib Akhtar’s 6/16 in Karachi in 2002.

5 Shami became the fifth bowler to take seven wickets or more in a World Cup match and the first to do so in a knockout game. He reached the milestone of 50 wickets during the match with Kane Williamson’s wicket. The 795 balls by him to the landmark makes him the quickest to do so, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s 941 deliveries.

23 Wickets by Shami in World Cup 2023 is the most by an Indian bowler in a single edition of the World Cup, going past Zaheer Khan’s 21 in 2011. Only Starc (27 in 2019) and Glenn McGrath (26 in 2007) have more scalps to their name in a single World Cup edition.

4 Five wicket hauls for Shami in World Cups – the most by a bowler overtaking Micthell Starc’s three. Shami became the first bowler to pick three five-fers in a single edition of the tournament following 5/54 vs New Zealand and 5/18 vs Sri Lanka.

This was Shami’s fourth five-fer in his last eight ODIs. His four fifers in 2023 is only bettered by Waqar Younis’ five in 1990 while Shahid Afridi also had four such instances in 2011.

India batters make merry

51 Sixes by Rohit Sharma makes him the leading six-hitter in World Cup contests, surpassing 49 by Chris Gayle. Rohit has hit 28 sixes in 2023 World Cup, making it the most by a player in one edition, going past Gayle’s 26 maximums in 2015. Shreyas Iyer sits third on the list with 24.

2 Shreyas Iyer (117) and Kohli (105) became the second pair to score hundreds in the same innings in a World Cup knockout game. The only other pair to do so before was Tillakaratne Dilshan (108*) and Upul Tharanga (102*) against England in the quarterfinal in Colombo RPS in 2011.

67 Balls taken by Shreyas for his century, making it the quickest in knockouts in World Cups surpassing Adam Gilchrist’s 72-ball effort against Sri Lanka in the final of the 2007 edition. It is the third quickest for India in World Cups behind KL Rahul’s 62-ball knock against Netherlands in Bengaluru three days ago and Rohit’s 63-ball century against Afghanistan earlier in the tournament.

10 This was India’s tenth consecutive win in ODIs surpassing the previous longest sequence of nine in 2017 and 2008-09. It is also the third longest in World Cups behind Australia’s 25 between 1999 and 2011 and India’s 11 spread across 2011 and 2015 editions.

397/7 by India is the highest total in a knockout match in World Cup history, surpassing New Zealand’s 393/6 in the quarterfinal against West Indies in Wellington in 2015. New Zealand’s riposte of 327 happens to be the first instance of a chasing side scoring 300+ in World Cup knockouts. 724 runs in this contest by both sides makes it the third most in a World Cup match and the most ever in a knockout game.

19 Sixes hit by India is the most by them in a World Cup contest, going past 18 against Bermuda in Port of Spain in 2007. Eight sixes by Shreyas is the most by an Indian batter in a World Cup match, going past seven each by Sourav Ganguly against Sri Lanka in Taunton in 1999 and Yuvraj Singh against Bermuda in Port of Spain in 2007.

New Zealand leave a mark

2 Hundreds by Daryl Mitchell against India in this World Cup – 134 in the semifinal to follow 130 in the league game in Dharamsala. He became only the second player to score two hundreds against an opponent in the same edition of the World Cup after Sourav Ganguly against Kenya in 2003. 134 by Mitchell is the highest individual score in a defeat in a World Cup knockout contest, surpassing Chris Harris’ 130 against Australia in the quarterfinal in 1996.

578 Runs by Rachin Ravindra is the joint-most by a New Zealand batter in a World Cup, equalling his skipper Kane Williamson’s effort in 2019. Daryl Mitchell finished the tournament with 552 runs, the third on the list.

2 The number of times Tim Southee has conceded 100+ runs in an ODI. No other bowler has done it more than once. Southee’s first instance also came against India, in Christchurch in 2009, when he conceded 105 runs.
