Sophie Devine’s scintillating ton guides Perth Scorchers to big win

Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers

Sophie Devine hit a scintillating century – 106 off 62 balls – involving 14 fours and 4 sixes as Perth Scorchers posted a mammoth 192/3 and defended it with ease to pocket the two points. Devine then came back to pick up two wickets while Piepa Cleary bagged three to bundle out the home side Brisbane Heat for 153 in the 18th over.

Jess Jonnassen’s decision to bowl came back to haunt her quickly as her opposite number – Devine – and Beth Mooney added a 131-run stand for the opening wicket off just 89 balls. Along the way, Mooney scored a 42-ball 50 with five fours. Nat Sciver-Brunt then joined forces with Devine to push the innings ahead as they put on 57 off just 29 balls to push the team towards the 200-run mark. Though they didn’t get there, it was more than sufficient against the hosts.

Heat suffered two early dents with the dismissals of opener Grace Harris and Amelia Kerr by the third over with the score only on 22 runs. Georgia Redmayne, who top-scored for Heat with a 44-ball 53, attempted short stands with the middle-order batters but it proved to be insufficient. Devine used six bowlers including herself and all of them had something to show for in the wickets column. Devine finished with figures of 2 for 33 in 3 overs while right-arm pacer Piepa Cleary bagged 3 for 27 in 4. Alana King picked up two while the troika of Taneale Peschel, Chloe Ainsworth and Amy Louise Edgar picked one each. In the 18th over, Alana King ended Redmayne’s fight and wrapped up the innings with a double-wicket over to complete a 39-run win for her side.

Brief Scores: Perth Scorchers 192/3 in 20 overs (Sophie Devine 106, Beth Mooney 50; Nicola Hancock 1-26) beat Brisbane Heat 153 in 17.3 overs (Georgia Redmayne 53; Piepa Cleary 3-27, Sophie Devine 2-33) by 39 runs
