Veteran fast bowler Tim Southee will join New Zealand’s World Cup squad later this week as he continues to progress in his recovery following surgery on his fractured right thumb.
Southee broke a bone in his right thumb while fielding in the fourth ODI against England at Lord’s on September 15. He returned home and consulted specialists, who recommended surgery. The 34-year-old will now hope to get fully fit in time for the Black Caps’ World Cup opener against England on October 5 in Ahmedabad.
As a contingency, pace-bowler Kyle Jamieson will also join the World Cup squad in India this week to train, following the ongoing ODI series in Bangladesh.
Jamieson will not officially be part of the World Cup squad and therefore not available to play in any of the warm-up matches scheduled for Friday against Pakistan and Monday against South Africa.
